Valentina and MarĂa de Buenos Aires

Posted 6/4/2017

It was during the recording of Revolucionario, many years ago that Robert McFall asked me if I would be interested to take part in a future recording of María de Buenos Aires, Piazzolla’s tango masterpiece. ‘A dream for the future’, he said. Without even thinking about it I said, ‘Of course, I‘d love to!’, still submerged in the bliss of what was my first recording with McFall’s Chamber. Now it is a reality. Yes, a Chilean woman in Scotland, singing the part of María, in Piazzolla’s magnificent tango operita. I have sung since I was little. I taught myself. Folk music and tango. My two loves. Some people ask me, ‘A Chilean singing tango?’ ‘Why not?’ I say. ‘We are brothers in Bolívar’s America! Music brings down walls’, I say. ‘It builds bridges! And let’s be clear, we need bridges more than ever now!’ ‘Why tango?’ ask the folkloristas. ‘Why folk?’ ask the tangueristas. I say, ‘You cannot choose between your parents. And they have both been my ‘parents’ in this life that I have had to live away from my homeland. Long live Piazzolla! Long live Violeta Parra! And ‘thanks be to life’, for it has given me folk and tango!’
