About us

David and Valentina
Valentina  grew up outside her native homeland, after the 1973 coup in Chile.  She settled in Scotland on meeting guitarist David Russell at the Edinburgh Festival. Together they founded Valentina and Voces del Sur.

Valentina writes and sings songs of exile, love and social change,  inspired by tango and folk music traditions  from Latin  America.  With her guitar and cuatro she creates a style that is very  much her own, with a powerful stage presence and voice to prickle the hairs.  Scots guitarist David Russell adds his diverse musical background to Valentina's work and also takes a fundamental role in the  group's artistic  direction and song writing.

They made their debut at the legendary old Bongo Club in Edinburgh, where coincidentally, Valentina encountered the renowned Scottish chamber ensemble, Mr. McFall's Chamber, with whom she also began an ongoing and  fruitful collaboration singing tango. (She will be recording her own tango songs
Mr McFall's Chamber in the spring of 2012, with the participation of  Argentine bandoneonist Victor Villena [Ex-Gotan Project] and French violinist Cyril Garac).

Valentina and David have recently  finished recording their next album with Greek Producer Vangelis Fampas - to be  released by
Massive Productions, under the English title "Little Book of Love and Exile".  This recording took place in Athens and on the island of Ikaria. It involves the participation of some of Greece's most accomplished musicians, including Iraklis Vavatsikas, Nikos Touliatos, Tatiana Manolidou and enjoys a lush production by composer and filmaker, Vangelis Fampas, who also plays on, and wrote a song for, the album.

Their presentations include  performances on various BBC radio programmes, as well as many festivals and major venues throughout the UK.  They have supported Eliades Ochoa in Scotland, toured the UK  and played in Mexico,  Chile,  Portugal, and Greece. They are now looking forward to touring their next album.

Valentina has recently collaborated with New York-based rapper Hache St (from the Dominican Republic) in his latest album 'Cognicion'. She features on his song
'No hay mas filo que mi texto'.
